Legendary games designer Shigeru Miyamoto has admitted that Toon Link who has appeared in the fantastic Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass and The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks ultimately hasn’t appealed to every Zelda fan out there.

“As for the [Toon] Link, I call it Link-eyed cat. I’ll admit it took courage to enter this design more cartoon. In the end if we took this decision is that the time we really wanted to make a game typical Nintendo.”

“An adventure that represents the soul of our society. So Link is a boy rather usual class, it was completely reinvented with a more streamlined look. Besides, it allowed us to create a real distinction between his adventures on home console and portable. Each has its own identity the coup and that is just fine. So yes, well I know, there are plenty of people who hate cartoon version … but there it is!”

Talented artist Wil Overton worked on the final Nintendo Gamer covers, and subscribers to the British magazine are getting a special cover that features Nintendo mascot Mario dressed in parts of Samus’ suit and Link’s outfit. Apparently, Link’s boots are no good for stomping Goombas – so, instead, Mario’s only option is to squash the living daylights out of them. Poor, unfortunate Goomba.

Miyamoto Talks About The Origin Of Link

In an in-depth interview with Game Kult legendary developer Shigeru Miyamoto has explained the origin of Link from the esteemed Legend of Zelda series. Miyamoto says that they wanted to create a character that was instantly recognisable, like Mario. They decided to give Link a long hat and long ears and went into the direction of an elf. Link’s name derived from the fact that the game is set in both the past and the future. As the main character would travel between both and be the link between them, they called him Link.

“Link sprite was designed by Takashi Tezuka. Like Mario, they wanted a character that would be recognisable from his sword and shield so they thought of a long hat and long ears and went into the direction of an elf. At the time, when you said long ears you thought of Peter Pan and as he’s a Disney fan, they drew inspiration from it.
Link’s name comes from the fact that originally, the fragments of the Triforce were supposed to be electronic chips. The game was to be set in both the past and the future and as the main character would travel between both and be the link between them, they called him Link.”

The development team behind the critically acclaimed The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker have revealed that they initially thought about having beams shoot out of Link’s eyes when the started development on the game. The team revealed that Miyamoto said that they needed to come up with a means to justify Link’s oversized eyes and this could have been the thing they needed. However, Takizawa concludes that this wouldn’t have been a good idea.

“Now that the eyes had gotten much larger, we wanted to make their facial expressions richer by increasing the number of patterns for the eyes and mouth. Partway through, we even talked about having beams come out of those eyes! (laughs). I don’t think [eye] beams were really an option, though.

Aonuma Says The Zelda Franchise Isn’t Annual In An Effort To Preserve Quality

Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has told Shacknews that the Legend of Zelda series isn’t an annual franchise as the team want to continue preserving quality. Aonuma admitted to the publication that the team had initially tried to get Zelda games out as soon as possible, but now there’s such high expectations of the franchise, they have decided to take their time.

“I think before, we did maybe try to make Zelda games come out faster. But there’s so much expected of Zelda titles now, so you have to reach a certain level of quality, so that’s why we started to take a bit more time now. I don’t think it’s necessary that development needs to be longer. But to reach a certain level of quality, there’s just a certain amount of time that’s needed. Obviously, the company is telling me that I need to put games out as quickly as possible. It’s not like we feel like we have a duty to get one out a year. Right now, we’re able to split ourselves between the handheld and console games and have two teams. I think we’re pretty efficient in getting games out on a regular interval.”

Thanks, iceazeama

Following yesterday’s screenshot featuring the redesigned capsules, this latest screenshot for the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. features a face off between two beloved characters, Marth and Link. Director Masahiro Sakurai once again took to Miiverse, commenting on the sharp tip of Marth’s sword. Will Link regain some of his lost power, or will Marth be able to easily beat him out in this next installment of the series?

“Marth’s sword has a powerful tip! So we gave his sword slashes a sharp look with an emphasis on its edge.”

Darksiders Artist Joe Madureira Draws Link

Joe Madureira, the creative director and artist behind the Darksiders franchise, has taken a stab at drawing the iconic Link from the Legend of Zelda series. Darksiders is a title that is clearly inspired by the Zelda franchise, so it’s unsurprising that one of Madureira’s first images is his own portrayal of Link. Madureira drew a younger version of Link, because that’s the version he says that he personally prefers. He also says that would like to  draw other recognisable video game characters in the future. Who would you like to see him draw next?

My take on Link from the Legend of Zelda games. It’s sort of an amalgamation of all the versions of Link from all the games. I like young Link for some reason, more than the ‘badass’ older Link. Go figure!

This was so much fun I’m going to hit some of the other characters on the massive list you all generated in the coming weeks. Inhuman has me pretty swamped, but I will make it happen

Super Smash Bros designer Masahiro Sakurai has given us a glimpse at Link’s alternative costume in the Wii U version of the game. The image above shows Link in his traditional Skyward Sword clothing. It’s a new design for Link and isn’t a simple colour change for the character. The Wii U version of the game launches this winter.

Pic of the day. Here’s Link in an outfit based on his ordinary clothes in Skyward Sword! The art style looks a little different, but the actual clothing model is still his usual tunic.

Nintendo Documents Say Link Almost Killed Zelda

The Legend of Zelda series protagonist Link nearly killed Princess Zelda as a result of “poor lighting” and a massive spider. This tidbit was found in a Nintendo character reference guide, which also says that Link comes from a family of telepaths. It was recently uncovered via the official guide that Yoshi’s real name is T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas.

Each Princess of the House of Hyrule was a heroine in her own right. At sixteen years of age, Zelda the First defied Agahnim when he usurped power from the King. legend has it that she survived a cruel imprisonment and was rescued by Link. The truth, however, is that she had been on the verge of escaping on her own when Link burst into the chamber and nearly slew her on the spot on account of the poor lighting and an enormous spider that had sat down beside her.
